The Cottonmouth

(Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma), also known as the Western Cottonmouth or Water Moccasin, is a venomous, semi-aquatic snake native to the southeastern United States. Known for its defensive displays and distinctive “cotton-white” mouth interior, which it shows when threatened, the Cottonmouth is often found near bodies of water like swamps, rivers, lakes, and marshes. With a thick, muscular body, a large triangular head, and coloration that ranges from dark brown to black, this snake can blend well with its natural habitat. Juveniles are lighter in color, often with bands, and display a yellow-tipped tail to lure prey-a trait they lose as they mature.

Growing between 2 to 4 feet on average, Cottonmouths are excellent swimmers and can be spotted both in water and on land, often resting near water sources or basking on sunny days. As opportunistic feeders, Cottonmouths consume fish, amphibians, small mammals, and even other snakes, helping maintain the balance in wetland ecosystems. Although they are not typically aggressive, they are highly defensive, especially when encountered unexpectedly. A Cottonmouth will often open its mouth wide to reveal the stark white lining as a warning, hoping to deter perceived threats. However, if a person or pet gets too close or provokes the snake, it will strike. Their venom is hemotoxic, causing pain, swelling, and potential tissue damage. While Cottonmouth bites are rarely fatal to humans, they can lead to severe complications, including infection and long-term tissue injury. For pets, especially dogs who might unknowingly approach a Cottonmouth, the venom can be far more dangerous due to their smaller body size and increased susceptibility, often requiring emergency veterinary care.

At All Creatures Pest Control, we specialize in ensuring safety from wildlife threats like Cottonmouths. Our trained specialists start by assessing your property to identify and remove potential snake attractants. Cottonmouths are drawn to areas with accessible water, tall grass, dense brush, and debris like woodpiles or construction materials, all of which provide cover and food sources. By addressing these habitats, we make your property less appealing to snakes. Additionally, our team can install exclusion barriers and recommend other preventative measures to minimize the likelihood of snake encounters around your home.

If a Cottonmouth is spotted, All Creatures Pest Control offers professional removal services to safely and humanely relocate the snake. We understand the risks Cottonmouths pose to families and pets and are committed to providing you with peace of mind through effective wildlife management strategies.
