The Eastern Hognose Snake

(Heterodon platirhinos) is a non-venomous snake native to the eastern United States, recognized for its distinctive upturned snout, which it uses for digging in sandy soils. Its coloration can vary widely, with patterns that may include shades of yellow, brown, gray, or even solid black, allowing it to blend into different environments.

The Eastern Hognose is best known for its dramatic defense behaviors when threatened, which include flattening its neck, hissing, and even pretending to strike-earning it the nickname “puff adder.” If these displays fail to deter a perceived threat, the Hognose may resort to playing dead, rolling onto its back with its mouth open in a convincing display.

Though harmless, the Eastern Hognose is often mistaken for venomous species like the Copperhead or rattlesnakes due to its behavior and appearance. This misidentification can lead to unnecessary harm to these beneficial snakes. Eastern Hognoses primarily feed on amphibians, particularly toads, and are not a threat to humans or pets. They do possess mild venom specific to amphibians, but it poses no danger to humans or most animals. Bites are exceedingly rare, as the Hognose is highly reluctant to bite and would much prefer to escape or rely on its defensive theatrics.

At All Creatures Pest Control, we understand the importance of coexisting with non-venomous wildlife, like the Eastern Hognose Snake, while ensuring family and pet safety.

Our wildlife specialists can assess your property to identify areas that may attract these snakes, such as gardens with loose soil, overgrown vegetation, or areas with abundant amphibian populations. Although Hognose Snakes are generally harmless and beneficial in controlling pest populations, their presence in backyards or gardens may cause alarm due to their defensive displays.

We offer humane removal services if an Eastern Hognose Snake is found on your property, safely relocating it to a more suitable environment away from residential areas. Additionally, we provide recommendations for habitat modifications to make your yard less appealing to Hognose Snakes and other wildlife. This can include clearing debris, maintaining well-trimmed lawns and gardens, and securing areas that may serve as hiding spots.

With All Creatures Pest Control, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing we are here to help you maintain a safe, snake-free environment. Our team’s knowledge and humane approach ensure that both your family and beneficial, non-venomous species like the Eastern Hognose Snake are protected, promoting a balanced ecosystem around your home.
