(Farancia abacura reinwardtii) is a non-venomous, semi-aquatic snake native to the southeastern United States, including parts of Texas. Known for its unique appearance, the Western Mud Snake has a glossy black back with bright red or pink underbelly markings, which sometimes extend onto its sides, creating a striking contrast.
This medium-to-large snake can grow up to 4 feet in length, and its slender, smooth body helps it glide easily through water and mud. As a reclusive species, the Western Mud Snake is most commonly found in or near slow-moving water sources such as swamps, marshes, and along the edges of ponds and streams.
The Western Mud Snake is primarily nocturnal, spending much of its life hidden beneath logs, in muddy burrows, or among thick vegetation near water. Its diet consists mainly of aquatic prey, including eels, amphibians, and small fish. Due to its secretive nature, it is rarely seen during the day and typically avoids human contact. This species is known for its docile temperament and is unlikely to bite even when handled, preferring instead to curl into a ball as a defensive measure. When threatened, it may also flatten its body to appear larger, but it poses no danger to humans or pets.
While Western Mud Snakes are harmless, their sudden appearance can be alarming to those unfamiliar with them, especially around water sources or gardens near wetlands. For pet owners, interactions with this snake are rare due to its shy nature. However, if a curious pet were to approach, the snake is unlikely to respond aggressively and would prefer to retreat.
Supervision of pets near water bodies or damp areas where Mud Snakes might reside can prevent unnecessary stress for both animals.
At All Creatures Pest Control, we’re dedicated to keeping your family and pets safe while respecting the natural role of local wildlife. Our team of experts can inspect your property to identify any features that may attract Western Mud Snakes, including water sources, dense vegetation, and access to wet, muddy areas.
To reduce the likelihood of snake encounters, we recommend simple habitat modifications like clearing excess vegetation, maintaining a clean yard, and ensuring that water features are well-managed. For properties bordering marshy or swampy areas, creating barriers between your yard and the water can also be effective.
If a Western Mud Snake is spotted on your property, our specialists provide safe, humane removal services to relocate it to a suitable natural habitat.
